FOCUSED on a specific SUBJECT : Math, Science, etc.

The Process

Part 1: Goal Setting

  • FREE consultation to see if it's a good fit

  • Gather information from parents and anyone else working with the child

  • Parents, students, and I agree to first step skills and goals.

Part 2: Building skills and routines

  • Based on student's learning style and situation we create customized routines for target skills.

  • Students learn how they best plan, study, and learn!

Part 3: Building independence

  • The goal is for students to take ownership of these skills and use them without prompting.

  • It takes practice, building consistency, and seeing how well the strategies work, for the student to reach this level.

  • I integrate all of these into each session and use their current schoolwork so that they feel successful.

3)  Math Tutoring

I teach students math with two basic steps:

1) Create an individualized plan

Gather information from students, teachers and parents to identify what is getting in the way.

There are many skills in math: learning the content, applying steps to problems, planning and solving word problems, mathematical accuracy. It is important to identify what skills and content needs to be targeted.

Figure out how the child learns best: visual, step by step, discussing concepts etc.

2) Work the plan to make the student independent

Once we have established the target skills, content, and strengths of the student, I teach specific strategies that will help the students become independent.

Not only will the student learn the math content, but how they best learn.

The goal is that the student use the skills without my help and learn how to learn math!

4) Parent Session

Do you want to support your student but don't know where to start? Let's problem solve together! Here are some topics that I can support you with:

IEP or Neuropsych testing:
What does it mean?
Where do we start?

Studying vs. test taking skills:
What do I do if my student isn't performing well on tests?

Organization:
My student can do the work, but can't find the things to get credit!

Time management:
Helping your student learn to plan and manage time.

Student's definition of DONE is not the same as yours:
Completing and turning in QUALITY assignments

Stuck:
My student doesn't know what to do when they don't know the answer.  How do I help them without telling them?
